it comes unforeseen. one moment he's walking down a route he's traveled a hundred times before, and the next he's gone. in a blink of an eye, life is taken away.
perhaps he should have seen it coming. as unforeseen as it is, it isn't unprecedented. maybe things would have been different if he was dressed differently. or if he had heard the ruffling of the bushes. or if he had chosen a different route.
but he chose that one. he sealed his own fate.
on the thirteenth of february, on the eve of valentine's, daniel walker lost his life.
killed in action and yet the league are not willing to hold a funeral for one of their officers. but that is to be expected: war makes each person just another number. daniel is among one of the many who have lost their lives to rocket. and he won't be the last.
the funeral is small, humble, because that is all the walker family can afford. those in attendance are either family or close friends. the absence of league personnel makes it feel as though his death is inconsequential; that he is just another body among the thousands.
as his casket is lowered into the ground and the dirt fills up to the very top, people start paying their respects before dispersing. they have their lives left to live.
daniel walker does not.
